After HTML5, the second language to study when learning web design is CSS3.
CSS stands for “Cascading Style Sheets.” Like HTML, it is a markup language, not a coding language. It’s used primarily to dress up the site. It is a huge time-saver when it comes to design because it can be used to give all the pages on a site the same overall look. Without it, you’d have to code in everything on every web page.
There are a handful of sites that can be used for learning CSS3. You’ll find them listed below. Some teach only at the beginner’s level while other progress to advanced. Hopefully they will give you or your child/teen the knowledge needed to design a site with style sheets.
Resources for Learning CSS3
W3schools: This site offers tutorials, examples, and resources that can help anyone learn CSS3.
HTML Dog: The HTML Dog isn’t just a site for learning HTML5. You can find beginner, intermediate, and advanced tutorials for CSS3 here as well.
HTML5andCSS3.org: You’ll find tutorials for both web design languages here.
Microsoft Virtual Academy: This is a fundamentals course offered by Microsoft.
Codecademy: The well-known Codecademy offers a course on HTML & CSS at this link.
If you’d like to see some beautiful designs using CSS, I highly recommend the CSS Zen Garden site. The same web page has been redesigned in multiple ways by volunteers using CSS. You can look at the markups for these designs to find out how they were accomplished.
I hope you found this list helpful for learning CSS3 or for teaching your kids/teens about style sheets. Feel free to share this list with other you know who would like to learn or teach web design.
